The coastal region is more prone to disasters like drought and floods and thus women are impacted by the effects of climate change. 80 percent of the Kenyan population lives in rural areas and derives their incomes and livelihoods on land and natural resources which are susceptible to changes in climatic conditions. The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that 70 percent of the rural population are female and carry out 60 to 80 percent of the agricultural work.
In Kenya these women contribute 80 percent of the agricultural labour force hence women are most impacted by climate change. And despite the women’s enormous contribution to the agriculture sector and national GDPs, women’s vulnerability is exacerbated by the fact that access to and control over land and other resources in Kenya remains extremely constrained. Sauti works with women and other stakeholders to ensure that we counter the effects of climate change.
-Works with other stakeholders to respond with humanitarian support and save lives during disasters e.g distribution of foodstuffs.
-Sauti creates awareness in the community for women to adopt Climate Resilient Sustainable Agriculture (CRSA) practices by diversifying crops, and increasing soil and water conservation example growing green grams.
-Collaborate with county governments and National Governments to put measures in place to reduce the vulnerability of women and girls during disasters, especially at the grassroots levels e.g drilling of bore holes and dams.
-Build capacities of women to respond promptly during disasters
